Introduction
The statisticians of the Julius Center provide the compulsory statistical coursework for students of four faculties/departments (Medicine; Veterinary Medicine; Biology; and Pharmaceutical Sciences) as well as several optional courses. Within the faculty Medicine the statisticians provide the statistical training for the Biomedical Sciences programme and for Nursing Science, Linguistic Science and Physical Therapy Science of the General Health Sciences programme. Furthermore, they offer special courses for graduate students on various applied statistical methods.

The main purpose of all of these courses is to teach students the principles and methods of biostatistics.

Description
Scientific research is a human activity based on intellectual investigation and aimed at discovering, interpreting, and revising human knowledge on different aspects of the world. It relies on the application of scientific methods based on scientific paradigm. To examine whether the theory agrees with reality, data will be collected.

The role of biostatistics within scientific research is twofold: 1) modelling of the association between the theory and the measurements and 2) examining whether the measurements agree with the models and hence with the theory. It uses a large toolbox for the design of research, the collection of data, the presentation of data, the analysis of data and the interpretation or explanation of results.

In all of the biostatistical courses the basic statistical tools will be presented and in the advanced courses also more sophisticated tools are treated.
