Vici for top research

Published: Friday, December 29, 2006

Prof. Marc Bonten MD from Internal Medicine and the Julius Center UMC Utrecht received a VICI-grant of 1,25 million Euro from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for his research ‘Combating Antibiotic Resistance by Integrating Molecular Biology and Mathematical Modeling’. With this amount he has to establish his own research group within five years.
Marc Bonten examines transmission dynamics of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the community and health care settings. In this proposal two extremes of the scientific spectrum – molecular biology based in the microbiology lab and the theoretical science of mathematical modeling – will be integrated to investigate population biology and transmission of specific genotypes of pathogens. Insights from these studies will improve our understanding of the global emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and will allow better prediction on the effects of infection control measures.

The VICI-grant from the NWO is for excellent researchers who successfully developed a new research line. These scientists belong to the top within their field of research. Each VICI-researcher receives 1,25 million euro. With this amount he or she has to establish an own research group within five years. This year thirty researchers received a VICI-grant, two went to the UMC Utrecht.
