Two international awards granted to Prof. Brunekreef

Professor Bert Brunekreef, professor of Environmental Epidemiology and director of the interfaculty Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences in Utrecht, will accept two international awards in the month of september.

 

On 9th September, he will receive the ‘John Goldsmith Award’ in Mexico City from the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE). The ‘John Goldsmith Award for Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Epidemiology’ is granted once a year to someone who has made an exceptional effort in the area of environmental care and health and who, according to the ISEE, ‘serves as model of excellence in research, unwavering promotion of environmental health, and integrity.’ The ISEE is the most prominent international professional association in the field of environmental epidemiology. Professor Brunekreef is the first Dutch researcher who is granted this award. More information is available on the website of the ISEE.

 

On 15th September, he receives the ‘European Lung Foundation Award’ in Stockholm. The ‘ELF Award’ is granted once a year to someone who has made an exceptional effort to improve public health. Professor Brunekreef receives this award for his research into the influence of environmental factors on the respiratory system, and for his efforts to translate research results into environmental standards to protect public health. In recent years, this award was granted to euro commissioner David Byrne, WHO Director Gro Harlem Brundtland, epidemiologist Sir Richard Peto and most recently to Dutch virologist Ab Osterhaus. Prof. Dr. Bert Brunekreef is a professor of Environmental Epidemiology. Until 2000, he worked at the WUR in Wageningen and in 2000, his chair group was transferred to the University of Utrecht.
