The division Julius Center’s research activities focus on four research themes, corresponding to four of the total of six research programs of the UMC Utrecht. i.e. 3 disease-related areas: Cardiovascular Diseases, Infectious Diseases and Cancer, and one methodological theme: Theoretical Epidemiology & Biostatistics. The research methods for all disciplines can be broadly categorized as (clinical) epidemiological. Links to the various research themes are provided below:
Cardiovascular Diseases
Research within this theme uses approaches that include the full range of epidemiological research methods, such as multi-centered randomized controlled trials to study the effects of preventive and therapeutic interventions, cohorts, case-control and cross-sectional studies. Research focuses on the causes, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy of cardiovascular diseases. more...
Infectious Diseases
Infectious diseases research at the division Julius Center is primarily centered on the prevention, diagnosis and prognosis of respiratory tract infections. In addition to this, there is a focus on (cost) efficacy of vaccination strategies and mathematical modeling of infectious diseases. A growing number of projects focuses on the effects of nosocomial infections and the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria on patient outcome. more...
Cancer Epidemiology
Cancer research at the division Julius Center focuses on the etiology and early diagnosis screening of hormone dependant cancer, predominantly in women. Cancer etiological research within the division Julius Center has a strong focus on the interaction between genes, hormones and lifestyle habits. more...
Theoretical Epidemiology and Biostatistics
This section conducts studies aiming to improve existing methods and to develop innovative methods for design and analysis of (clinical) epidemiological studies, with an emphasis on prediction (i.e. diagnostic and prognostic) research and on topics such as confounding and effect modification. more...
